A good quality edition produced 172 years ago. Each book is bound in black leather, with brass edging and working clasps. The leather covers are in good condition, little wear. Some very light surface scratches, and a little rubbing and at the top and bottom of the spines. Gilded titles on spines a little faded. Brass edging and clasps in good condition, a little discoloured in parts from an aged patina common with brass. Both clasps in full working order. Page edges gold gilded, a little dulled and scratched. Both books contain ribbon markers, looking a bit straggly.
The inside front and back covers are plain white, a little yellowed with age. Top edge stamped with ‘Hatchard & Son’, bottom edge stamped with ‘Bound by Hayday’. Previous owner ink inscriptions at the beginning of both books.
Both text blocks in good condition, no highlighting, notes or inscriptions. Pages have yellowed a little with age. Contents appears complete and relatively unused.
The leather box remains functional, although the clasp no longer locks in place. Some surface wear and light cracking of hinge leather. Padded interior a little discoloured and worn in parts.
Overall this set remains in good reading condition, an attractive quality binding in its day, with as described signs of age, use and wear.
