THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER,
And administration of the sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Church of England together with the Psalter and Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches, and the form and manner of making, ordaining, and consecrating of bishops, priests, and deacons.
Printed at the Oxford University Press, London: Henry Frowde. The printer to the University is named as Horace Hart, who's tenure ran between 1883-1915.
Pica 12mo. Thin.
The book measures 11.5cm x 18cm, 2cm thick.
Bound in dark green leather. Gilt line runs along edge of the boards. Gilt title on spine. End papers and paste down are in matching dark green silk moire. The paste downs have gilt line borders, with a gilt heart motif stamped in each corner.
There are some clear signs of age, use and wear. Leather cover has numerous blemishes and spots of wear, edges shelf worn, corners bumped. The boards warp out slightly. The spine is significantly sunned, discoloured to brown from green. Gilt title remains bright. Gilt page edges are noticeably dulled and scratched. End pages/paste downs remain attractive, some general minor wear. Gilt heart motifs bright, a little warped at the bumped corners. First blank end paper has a large black ink inscription, as does the blank page opposite the title page. Significant age related toning/yellowing of the contents, including foxing, mostly affecting the end pages. Overall the binding is strong, firm and contents complete. Some slight creasing, corner folds etc throughout. Title page gutter margin shows separation/splitting from the adjacent page, however both pages firmly in place.
Overall despite its clear signs of age, use and wear this remains a good reading copy. The attractive end pages/paste downs and gilt decoration are a pleasant addition. The text is nice and large, easy to read. A good example of early 20th century binding. Please study all photographs for the best understanding of condition.
