THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER
THE NEW TESTAMENT
PSALMS OF DAVID.
Printed MDCCCXLIII (1843) at the Oxford University Press, London.
A exceptionally rare, high quality and stunning binding. A soft green velvet hardback cover, with intricate metal work border on both front and back, joined with clasp. The page edges are gold gilded and have a beautiful pressed gauffered design. The inside front and back cover are also covered with green velvet, topped with a silk embroidered cut out, both end papers are also matching. This exquisite binding would have been provided for the very high in society back in 1843, and would have been very expensive.
The book measures 8.5cm x 12.5cm, 4.5cm thick.
Please look at all the photos for the best understanding of the condition and contents.
Despite being in remarkable condition for it’s age there are some mentionable signs of age, use and wear. The green velvet cover appears in good condition, some small patches are a little marked from handling, not unusual with velvet. Church Service gilded title to the spine. The metal border is very firmly attached to the front and back cover. There is some discolouration to the metal in parts, and a few of the prongs that line the edges are a little misshapen, five of the prongs have a missing tip. The ornate clasp is in full working order and closes nicely, some dulling and discolouration of the metal.
The inside front and back cover are identical. A little discoloured but in good condition. Board hinges are good with no splitting. End papers matching and in good condition.
The gold gilded gauffered page edges are in good condition. Slightly dulled with age, and some minor marking from handling.
The overall text block is tight, firm with no loose pages. Some slight page tearing in the title page gutter from front board opening to wide unsupported. Three cream coloured ribbon page markers in worn discoloured condition. Majority of the pages are clean, all entirely legible, some minor foxing in places.
Overall a very rare exquisite antique edition, highly unusual binding reserved for the very wealthy. A must have item for serious collectors of fine books.
We have have attempted to be as detailed as possible regarding the condition, despite its clear high quality please do expect the signs of age, use and wear. If you require any further information/photographs then please don't hesitate to ask.
