Miniature Book Of Common Prayer, Hymns, Silver Hallmarked Cover, c1918, Oxford
Miniature Book Of Common Prayer, With Hymns Ancient & Modern.
Printed by Humphrey Milford at the Oxford University Press, London. He was the University Printer between 1913-1945
Hallmarked Silver Mount to front board. Attractive cross and floral design, with purple background. Hallmarks read as WSLD, believed to be Widmers Ltd, London Silver Mounters. Letter b represents the year 1917. The lion mark indicates the London Assay Office. Previous owner inscription on fly leaf dated 1919.
The book measures 5cm x 5.5cm.
The book is in good condition for its age, with a few signs of wear. The black Morocco leather cover has mild rubbing along the edges, but no splitting with the hinges holding very well. The silver is a little dulled and lightly scratched. It’s fixed firmly to the front board. Black end papers in good condition, very slight surface wear. Black ink inscription on the first end paper dated 1919. Overall text block in good condition, lightly used. Some age toning throughout but all text legible. Some minor page creasing typical with India Paper. Gilt page edges are bright though lightly scratched and a little faded. Illustrated Frontispiece to both title pages.
Overall this is a lovely example of a miniature prayer book, with as described signs of age, use and wear. An attractive and uncommon silver cover design makes for a collectible edition. Come with original blue cardboard box, well worn but remaining functional.
