New Testament, Burkitt’s Testament, 1753 Rare, Expository Notes Observations
£1,000.00 inc. tax
EXPOSITORY NOTES, WITH PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS, ON THE NEW TESTAMENT OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST.
Wherein the sacred text is at large recited, the sense explained, and the instructive example of the blessed Jesus, and his Holy Apostles, to our imitation recommended.
The whole designed to encourage the reading of the Scriptures in private families, and to render the daily perusal of them profitable and delightful.
By William Burkitt, M.A. Late Vicar and Lecturer of Dedham in Essex.
The fourteenth Edition carefully corrected.
Printed MDCCLIII (1753), London.
The renowned preacher Charles Spurgeon regarded Burkitt's commentary as a "goodly volume," and recommended "attentive perusal" of it.
Fascinating family history of the original owners has been written across the first few pages, surname Gange. The first page has a list of family deaths and births, dates and ages. The following two pages have a testimony written by Joseph Gange concerning the death of his sister Ruth Gange, aged 17 years, written 1781. The handwriting can be difficult to read, however it has also been typed up by typewriter, the legible typed copy has been attached opposite the original. The inscriptions and notes also follow through onto the title page and beyond by a further couple of pages. Curious illegible sentences, and a large number of dates are written across the margins of the title page. The majority of the text block does not have any further inscriptions.
At some point in its history the book has been rebound. Large folio with leather spine and corners. The inscribed pages at the beginning have been placed back in and strengthened as presumably previously detached. The rebind has ensured a strong long lasting condition, very sturdy and durable.
This is a large book, measuring 25.5cm x 37cm, 6cm thick. It’s very heavy, weighing approximately 3.7kg. The weight and dimensions greatly affect the cost of postage, overseas in particular. This is regrettably unavoidable, however you can be assured a well packaged secure parcel, with tracking and sign for delivery.
Please look at all the photos for the best understanding of the condition and contents.
As should be expected there are some signs of age, use and wear. The cover has some noticeable surface wear, scratches and marks, the boards edges and corners show shelf edge wear. There is age/use related page discolouration/creasing dotted throughout, foxing/yellowing typical with antique paper, though majority of the pages remain in very good reading condition. Overall contents binding appears strong, tight and complete. A few pages have crumpled or mildly torn wavy margin page edges, this does not affect use.
Overall remains in good fully functional useable condition, a strong sturdy book, with as described signs of age, use and wear.
