The book was bound and sold by J. C. Vickery of 179, 181, 183 Regent Street, London.
John Collard Vickery and his then partner, Arthur Thomas Hobbs, bought up the long established business of William Griggs, a stationer and bookseller at 183, Regent Street in c.1890. William Griggs had been at 183 Regent street as early as 1843 and 1854. When they took over they expanded the stock to include jewellery, dressing cases, gold and silver lines. Continuing alone after 1891, Vickery extended his premises in 1900 to 179, 181 and 183 Regent Street, with showrooms to the rear at 1 New Burlington Place.
He became a renowned Goldsmith, silversmith, jeweller, dressing case and fitted travelling bag manufacturer, watch and clock importer, and more. JC Vickery obtained the following royal warrants: HM the King, HM the Queen, HM Queen Alexandra, TRH the Prince and Princess of Wales, HM the King of Portugal, HM the King of Spain, TM the King and Queen of Denmark, HM the Queen of Norway, HM the King of Sweden, and Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein.
The book measures 9cm x 14cm. The case 10cm x 15cm.
Please check all photographs for a good understanding of the condition.
Pre owned with some signs of age/use. The leather cover has visible rubbing, top and bottom of spine particularly rubbed, some light scratches, spots of discolouration/blemishes etc. The leather is padded, it feels soft to touch, and has been given a tortoise shell effect. There are floral gilt patterns across all sides, with gilt title on spine, floral border, and gilt monogram of the owner’s initials MN, central to the front board. Corners and edges of the boards shelf worn. The boards are holding well, firm with no exterior or interior cracking of the hinges.
Marbled end papers and paste downs are good, no splitting, a little worn. Gilt roll runs along outer edge of inside covers, a little dulled. Text block in good reading condition. Mild Yellow toning of the pages all throughout, some foxing/spotting mainly to the blank end pages. Overall text block is holding strong with no loose/missing pages, the title page gutter webbing is visible but holding strong. Page edges are red under gilt, some dulling and scratches noticeable. Original owner ink inscription on first blank end paper, along with a later pencilled date at the bottom of the page. J C Vickery is in gilt type along the bottom edge of the adjacent page.
The matching case is in similar condition. Some noticeable surface wear, scuffing and scratches. Matching leather and gilt design, strap noticeably worn but remains in full working order.
Overall both book and case remain in good useable condition, an attractive and once considered high end edition, with as described clear signs of age, use and wear.
