Attached to 2nd D. C. L. I. For Active Service in South Africa, 1900, by George Smith, Hon. Col. 1st V. B. D. C. L. I.
The khaki cloth hardback binding is unusual, a flap attached from the rear board folds into a slot formed in the front board. Designed to protect the text block during active service. The front board has a gilt title, The Knapsack Bible, South African Field Force 1899-1900.
The book measures 7.5cm x 12.5cm.
Please check all photographs for a good understanding of the condition.
Pre owned with some signs of age/use. The khaki cloth hardcover is faded and discoloured, appears to have been handled frequently. Gilt title on front board and spine dulled but visible. The flap remains functional, slots in well. The inner hinge of the flap has visible cracking of the cardboard used to stiffen the flap. Does not affect overall use as the strength of the cloth is adequate. Binding holding well, boards remain firm with no exterior or interior cracking of the hinges. Text block in good reading condition. Yellow toning of the pages all throughout, some foxing and minor soiling in parts. Page edges are coloured red, a little faded and scratched. Previous owner presentation plate glued to inside cover, along with glued in printed name and address plate on the first blank end paper, opposite the half title page.
Overall remains in good reading condition. A scarce collectible edition used in active service in South Africa, with as described signs of age, use and wear.
