The front cover has an illustration of a woman amongst blossom, with what appears to be several inlays of mother of Pearl, surrounding the head of the woman. Despite the illustration being rather faded the arrangement remains appealing, and we can find no other examples of this edition available online.
Edith Nesbit was an English writer and poet, who published her books for children as E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on more than 60 such books. Notable works include The Story of the Treasure Seekers, The Railway Children, Five Children and It.
The book measures 13cm x 16.5cm.

Pre owned with some signs of age/use/wear. Publisher's cream cloth, overall discoloured and marked. Front cover lettered in gilt and with color plate pasted onto front cover. Gilt border and heart shapes, faded. Illustration is faded and lightly frayed, Pearl inlays cracked, dirty. Spine lettered in gilt, with gilt floral design. Boards edges are noticeably shelf worn, corners bumped and worn, top and tail of the spine bumped. Hinges holding well, no splitting. Green illustrated end papers, foxed. Half title page has a pencil inscription, B.H. Whitelocke.
Contents is complete, all illustrations present and good. Binding firm. Pages a little grubby and marked, small amount of foxing dotted throughout. Lower right corner of Frontispiece is partially torn where previously stuck to title page, small tear that is surface only and doesn’t cut through the page. Page edges are gold gilt, a little dulled and scratched.
Overall remains in good reading condition. Appears used, faded and discoloured. A lovely scarce edition, with attractive binding and illustrations nonetheless.
