One Thousand copies have been printed of this Edition of which this is No. 870. List of subscribers at the rear.
The bulk of Cruikshanks Pilgrim's Progress drawings originally went unpublished, instead collected by his friend Edwin Truman, until Truman decided to release this edition.
Truman (1818-1905) was dentist to the royal household, an inventor of new methods in dentistry, and a notable book collector. "He took a special interest in collecting Cruikshank's satirical prints and caricatures as well as books illustrated by him, eventually forming the largest first-generation collection of his works"
The book measures 17cm x 26cm, 5cm thick.

Pre owned with some signs of age/use. The cloth hardcover is in acceptable condition, some surface wear and discolouration. A few marks/stains dotted about. Gilt title on spine fading. Corners and edges shelf worn.
Text block in good condition, minor creasing, page edges rough cut, top edge less so. Binding remains firm/tight, although gutter webbing slightly visible in a few places. All Illustrations present on thick paper with titled tissue guards. No previous owner inscriptions.
Overall remains in good reading condition, a scarce edition with fabulous Cruikshank drawings, with as described signs of age, use and wear.
