Preface; Most treatises upon Astronomy contain much which is quite unintelligible to those who have not passed through a regular course of mathematical studies. It is, however, very desirable that all the youth in our schools should be familiar with those simple yet sublime facts, which have been developed by this science. To present these facts in language which can be comprehended by every good understanding in our common schools and academies, is the object of this work. It is hoped that these pages may incite a deeper interest in the study of this most noble of all the sciences ; that it may disseminate widely, in the popular mind, an acquaintance with those truths which are so eminently calculated to elevate the understanding, and to ennoble the heart ; and that many may be induced to prosecute the study into those higher regions of mathematical inquiries, which can call into requisition all the energies of a Newton and a Herschel.
The book measures 9cm x 14.5cm.
There are clear signs of age, use and wear. The red leather hardback cover is significantly faded and discoloured. There is shelf wear along the boards edges, corners particularly bumped and worn. The spine appears to have been rebacked, or had some restoration. The spine remains significantly discoloured and surface worn, however the hinges remain strong and firm. Gilt title with telescope, moon and stars central to the front board, remains bright. End papers yellow, slightly discoloured and soiled. Text block complete, binding holding well, no loose or missing pages. The pages are generally yellowed with age, some mild foxing in parts. No previous owner inscriptions or page markings. The page edges are faintly speckled red.
Overall remains in good reading condition, the cover most notably worn but remaining functional. A scarce collectible edition for Astronomy enthusiasts.
